International Picnic Day is coming soon on Wednesday, June 18th this year. Take an extended lunch to gather outdoors to eat and enjoy some friendly company.
Picture1Want a lunch date? What better excuse than International Picnic Day to ask a coworker or friend out to lunch. Remember, this is a picnic though. Pack a picnic basket early or order a to-go meal to share at a local park or look out point.
The origins are hazy, but the observance can be traced all the way back to the end of the French Revolution and the Victorian Era. Picnics have always been a great way to escape the stress and restrictions of every day work and formality.
Picnic Day is an informal food holiday with just a few rules and a boat load of options. First rule, get outdoors and have a meal! Prepare some food ahead of time or let your coworkers and friends in on the fun early with a potluck picnic. You can assign dishes based on the first letter of your last name to make sure there are a variety of foods. Finally, enjoy the day.
“You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather.” Andre 3000 (song ‘Ms. Jackson’). Regardless of what the day brings, escape your workday for a picnic of some sorts. Even if it rains, try for a covered outdoor area or a restaurant with outdoor patio seating.
Enjoy the great outdoors. Did you know that June is actually Great Outdoors Month? It’s true. George W. Bush was responsible for the proclamation in 2002 to highlight not only Great Outdoors Month, but National Trails Day (June 7th), Great American Backyard Campout day (June 28th), as well as National Fishing and Boating Week (June 1st-8th).
Breath in summer. Kick off your dress shoes and relax in the sun this summer. Whether you actually get a vacation or just a few hours to breathe, enjoy the summer sun with coworkers, friends and family.
